Warmer, Drier, Greener: Your Guide to NZ's New Insulation Standards

Remember May 2023? That's when New Zealand upped the ante on its insulation game, bringing in stricter requirements for building warmer, drier, and more energy-efficient homes. From ceilings double-thick with snugness to toasty underfloor havens, the new standards are a win-win for homeowners and the planet. So, what changed?

Roofs:

Brace yourself for double the R-value, jumping from R3.3 to a cozy R6.6. That means thicker insulation blankets or double layers, keeping the heat in like a well-wrapped burrito.

Walls:

Hold steady! The R2.0 requirement remains, but improved window and door insulation will lend a helping hand.

Floors:

From chilly to chill-out, timber floors on piles now need R2.5 instead of R1.3, with R1.5-R3.0 for various concrete situations. Underslab insulation might be your new best friend.

Windows and doors:

These gateways to the world are getting snugglier, with R-values for glazing increasing in stages by November 2023.
